What is the Kinesiology tape?

Kinesiology tape, also known as "kinesio tape" or "KT tape," is a type of thin, stretchy, and elastic cotton tape used in sports medicine and physical therapy to treat injuries and relieve pain. This tape was first developed in the 1970s by a Japanese chiropractor named Dr. Kenzo Kase. You can buy kinesiology tape from Hummel, 8 C Plus, Gymstick, Gladiatorfit, and KT Tape.
The tape is designed to mimic the elasticity of human skin and is made of cotton fibers with a layer of acrylic adhesive on one side. It is applied directly to the skin in specific patterns and tensions to provide support and stability to the muscles and joints, reduce swelling and inflammation, and improve blood circulation. Kinesiology tape is commonly used by athletes to prevent and treat sports related injuries, such as sprains, strains, and tendonitis. It can also be used to relieve pain and discomfort associated with other conditions, such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fibromyalgia.
One of the benefits of kinesiology tape is that it allows for a full range of motion, unlike traditional athletic tape, which restricts movement. The tape can stay on the skin for several days and is waterproof, making it ideal for use during swimming and other water activities. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns and can be easily cut to fit any part of the body. Here´s a general guide on how to use kinesiology tape:

Prepare the skin: Start with clean, dry skin. If your skin is oily or sweaty, you can use alcohol swabs to clean and dry the area where you intend to apply the tape. Allow the skin to air dry completely.
Cut the tape: Measure and cut the desired length of kinesiology tape. It´s essential to round the edges of the tape to prevent it from peeling off prematurely.
Apply anchor strips: Cut two small strips of tape and use them as anchor strips. Apply these strips on both ends of the area you want to tape. These anchor strips will help secure the tape in place.
Stretch and apply: For most applications, you´ll need to stretch the tape as you apply it to the skin. The amount of stretch depends on the specific issue and the intended effect. Follow these guidelines: If you´re taping to support a muscle or joint, stretch the tape with moderate tension usually about 10 20% stretch as you apply it over the target area. If youre taping to reduce swelling or relieve pain, you may not need to stretch the tape at all.
Apply the tape: Position the tape over the area you want to support or relieve. Remove the backing paper and apply the middle portion of the tape first, without any stretch. Then, while peeling off the backing paper, apply the stretched ends of the tape over and around the target area. Gently rub the tape to activate the adhesive.
Smooth and secure: Use your fingers to smooth down the entire length of the tape, making sure it adheres well to the skin. This helps the tape stay in place. Be cautious not to create wrinkles or folds in the tape, as this can cause discomfort or skin irritation.
Check for comfort: Ensure that the tape is comfortable and doesn´t restrict movement or cause discomfort. If it feels too tight or painful, you may need to reapply it with less stretch or consider removing it.
Allow adhesive to set: It´s a good idea to wait for about 30 minutes before engaging in any strenuous physical activity or getting the tape wet. This allows the adhesive to fully bond with the skin.
Remove the tape: When it´s time to remove the tape, do it gently. Peel it off slowly in the direction of hair growth to minimize discomfort or skin irritation. Kinesiology tape can be applied to various areas of the body, and specific taping techniques depend on the intended purpose. Its often best to consult a healthcare professional or physical therapist for guidance on proper taping techniques for your particular issue. They can provide personalized advice and instruction based on your needs.
